a few summers ago i was standing on a coffee table doing a handstand. i had been a gymnast for 10 years, and i had recently signed up for the usa gymnastics national team. i had grown to love gymnastics, but at that moment, in front of a crowd of people and cameras, my body was absolutely petrified. i had never done a handstand in front of my teammates, coaches, or fans.
i had never competed in a handstand before, i had never even practiced doing a handstand before, but i had no choice. i had to put the gymnast i had worked so hard to be on display, and i needed to build my upper body strength.
i was doing gymnastics for 10 years, and i had never once practiced a handstand before. this was a skill i had never even touched. but i was now in the national training camp of the us team, and i had to build my upper body strength if i wanted to be on the squad that would compete at the world championships in sydney.
for those of you who dont know, the h1 plan is a unique system created by coach sommer that combines kettlebells with the power of your bodyweight. to start, coach sommer recommends using a kettlebell in each hand (one in each hand and youll be ready to go) and starting by performing a chair side to side handstand. the position is kept easy with some of the drills found in this system and the movement made simple by using a weight that is easy to manage and control. youll also start to get a feel for what the body does in this position, and that is a great start when it comes to learning how to perform the movement more powerfully.
