riding through a city like san francisco for a minute is like being dropped into 1960s when 50 years ago, people lived in simpler home, they were mostly farmers or merchant. this was the kind of environment were i found myself in when i was doing my internship at rivervale food fest 2012 that made me realize that the lack of food trucks is not a lack of interest. we need to see food trucks as the first “restaurant” of the city.

a few months later, having the opportunity to be an entrepreneur, i started to see the need for something to fill this gap. however, the problem faced was that food trucks were just opening up, there was no platform to connect them. i had the advantage of being in a big city and the disadvantage that i did not have any business background or many contacts. what my partners and i thought was to create the first app that would allow a community of people to support food trucks by subsidizing the cost of food, drinks and the activities they organized.

since our first app, lovetoeat, was launched in 2013, we have been able to connect approximately 100 food trucks to their patrons. using our food truck trust ranking, we find food trucks that have loyal and qualified customers who would be willing to subsidize them to a point that they can be more sustainable and sustainable at the same time for the market itself, by not having to compete with the big restaurant chains. our food trucks are thus better able to be sustainable.

our service is not unlike uber’s. our drivers are also like uber’s drivers. there are some differences. for example, we only work in san francisco, we have a service called lovetoeat that partners food trucks with customers and we also have a community of food trucks which are showcased in front of our app.

car-sharing provides a solution to individuals and households who normally would not have been able to afford either owning a car or using a taxi service as their primary mode of transport. in fact, even for those who can afford a car, if they drive 9,700 kilometres or less per year, its probably cheaper to share than to own. this translates to about 27 kilometres per day, which is most likely exceeded only by people who commute long distances to work. most people who live in the city would actually benefit from opting for car-sharing over owning a car. proper taxation structure is one of the biggest challenges that ride-sharing service providers face. governments around the world are still trying to decide how the apps contribution to society should be treated and what its impact will be to their tax base. governments have used varying responses to the services growth, but as the number of apps continue to rise, it will become more and more complex to regulate the market. in many cases, the simple answer is ride-sharing isnt yet a thing, because of its nascent nature. but a broader perspective should take into consideration how these apps operate, and whether or not they need to be regulated. if we turn the lens a little wider, we begin to recognize that the services these apps provide are already woven into our societies fabric. at present, people still own most of the assets in the economy. the apps that are rapidly changing the way people get around are just a symptom of the money thats still sitting in our economy. uber ranks low on this list. given its past problems, its top executives, especially ceo travis kalanick, are already being investigated by the us department of justice for potential violations of bribery and fraud laws. kalanick is alleged to have been fully aware of this investigation since its beginning and the fact that he is not facing a criminal trial has raised serious questions about the transparency that uber claims is so important to its investors. this case is one of multiple investigations and is also being investigated by the securities and exchange commission and the national association of attorneys general. the recent evidence of legal troubles has not shaken uber from its market position. according to research conducted by plan international in partnership with mckinsey & co, 93% of consumers would consider a ride-sharing app if one was available in their city. even when questioned about their attitude towards unregulated ride-sharing, the results were very positive. 5ec8ef588b
